What happened

Bandits attacked Horo Birni village in Shagari LGA, Sokoto State, abducting 14 people and rustling livestock. Troops of the 8 Division Garrison responded to distress calls, engaged the attackers who fled, and rescued the 14 victims while recovering 195 cows, 84 sheep, two camels and two motorcycles.

How the numbers were verified

Abduction is confirmed by the rescue account, so the 14 abductees are counted even though they were freed. No deaths reported on either side; attackers said to have sustained gunshot wounds (unquantified). Source is an unnamed 'credible security source' in the army via NAN, not a named spokesperson. Date inferred as Tuesday 4 Aug 2026 from 'on Tuesday' relative to the Wednesday briefing and 5 Aug publication.

Location

Horo Birni, Shagari, Sokoto — exact coordinates not recorded; marker placed at the centre of the state.
