Privacy notice
Plain language. No legal theatre.
This page explains what information Remains collects, why, what we do with it, and what you can ask us to do. It covers two things: email subscribers and people who submit incident reports. That is the full scope of personal information this platform handles.
01 — Email subscribers
If you enter your email address on remains.ng, you are signing up to be notified about the platform. That is the only thing we use your address for.
What we collect: your email address. Nothing else. Where it is stored: Buttondown, an independent email service chosen because it does not sell subscriber data or run advertising. How long: until you unsubscribe, or until the platform closes. How to leave: every email has an unsubscribe link, or write to editor@remains.ng and we will remove you immediately.
We never sell subscriber data. We never share your address with third parties. We never use it for anything other than what is stated above.
02 — Incident report submissions
When the platform accepts incident reports, providing contact information will always be optional — you will be able to submit entirely anonymously. We will never ask you to identify yourself if you do not want to.
Contact details provided with a submission are used for verification only — never for identification or publication — seen by the editorial team only, and deleted once verification completes or after 90 days, whichever is sooner. Incident content, stripped of identifying contact information, may be retained as part of the record.
We never publish the identity of a person who submitted a report without their explicit written consent. We never share submission contact details with governments, security forces, or anyone outside the editorial team.
If you are in a high-risk situation, secure contact details (Signal) will be published on the About page — you will not be required to use a web form.
03 — What we do not collect
Remains does not use tracking cookies, advertising networks, or analytics tools that identify individual users. We do not build profiles of visitors. We do not use your browsing behaviour for any purpose.
If we ever add analytics, it will be privacy-respecting and aggregated only — we will update this notice and state what we added and why.
04 — Your rights
You have the right to ask what information we hold about you, to ask us to correct it, and to ask us to delete it. Write to editor@remains.ng. We will respond within 14 days.
If you subscribed from the UK or EU, you also have rights under UK GDPR and EU GDPR respectively. If you believe we have handled your data incorrectly, you can contact the UK Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk.
05 — Changes to this notice
If we change how we handle personal information, we update this page and note the change. We do not change this notice silently.
